The “Pegasus Concert Series” is selected on the basis of outstanding performance skills and expressiveness, creativity and originality of the planning concept and programming, and sufficient cohesiveness as a one-night concert.
Double bassist Masashi Yamamoto has captured contemporary works with an original approach, and with his solid performance technique, he has broken new ground in solo contrabass.
This performance will feature masterpieces that draw out the characteristics of the double bass instrument from a variety of perspectives and pursue detailed depictions, unique techniques that take advantage of the double bass's large body and long strings, and masterpieces known to those in the know that are at once outlandish and artistically excellent. No other program is like this one, with an overwhelming presence, including some of the most difficult contemporary solo piece for double bass.
“Trittico per G.S." (Brian Ferneyhough), which requires multi-layered expression with deep insight, and “Convergence II" (Yoshihisa Taira), which carefully confronts inner impulses, have rarely been performed in Japan and will be valuable opportunities.
Also on the program will be “Valentine” (Jacob Druckmann), which has theatrical elements; “Generation of Space” (Toshi Ichiyanagi), which is written in a traditional style that is not too difficult for the instruments; “Theraps” (Iannis Xenakis), which is said to be impossible to perform completely according to the score; and the recently composed “Ombres portees" (Daniel D'Adamo), which was composed in recent years, incorporates all kinds of special techniques of the double bass, and offers a variety of sounds unique to this instrument.
In addition, the world premiere of Michio Kitazume's new piece will be held at the same time as this performance. The birth of a new masterpiece will be the focus of much attention.
All of these works create a microcosm that can only be created by the double bass. However, no matter how great the masterpiece, the presence of a player with the appropriate performance technique is indispensable to maximize the interest of the work.
We hope to present “Microcosm of Unaccompanied Double Bass” by Masashi Yamamoto, the one and only double bass player who continues his innovative activities, in a concert that fully expresses the charm of the work with abundant creativity and is worth listening to. Please come and experience an unprecedented double bass solo!
